1. Eggs in Toast! We made Eggs in Toast this morning, out of our stored dough from Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day. (Seriously, easiest bread ever. I like it even better than No Knead Bread. And there’s so much you can do with it!) Skipped the bacon because we didn’t have it. It was amazing. We will be making this again. (Um, I need to buy this book. I just returned it after borrowing it for the third time from the library…)

Pickin’ mulberries in the rain

They’re nice and dark, but if we let the berries sit for another day or two, they’d probably be super sweet. Again, we just can’t resist. Two of our five trees have dark berries scattered here and there; there are lots more young berries on those trees, too. The other trees’ berries are still white and green. We’ve eaten the berries out of hand, in bowls with milk and sugar, and on PB&J as fresh mulberry jam. Mmmmm…
3. Bed & Breakfast! I have this dream. I’ve always wanted to own a bed & breakfast. I want to find an old, beat up farmhouse or cottage in the country or on the lakeshore. I want to buy the property, build a small eco-friendly cottage for our family to live in, and renovate the farmhouse/cottage for the B&B. This way, we can have the cute old house without subjecting the children to the remodeling hazards associated with old houses (lead, asbestos, mold, etc.). And owning a B&B? Is right up my alley. I’d cook fresh breakfasts from food grown or produced on our farm, get to socialize with folks from around the world, but also have my own private quarters with my family. We could even make it a destination vacation, with guests able to join in on the farm chores for the total farm experience. I’ve actually considered paying for that sort of thing, and I know there are a lot of farm B&Bs out there.

Oh that looks good! Do you think any of the book’s recipes would work if made with whole spelt flour? Our family uses Spelt instead of wheat. I was looking up that book on Amazon and saw that in October they are coming out with a book titled something like Healthy Bread in Five Minutes. It looks good too.
I have little time for long drawn out bread recipes with an 8 month old–I am really thinking of buying a copy if you think the recipes might work with spelt, or do most of them need white flour added in?
Thanks. I enjoy your posts!
hi, jessica – thanks for stopping by!
i think you’ll get more use out of their new book, which should be out by this fall. it’s supposed to have all sorts of whole grains flours and such. on this post of their blog, in the comments, jeff says that you could use spelt in small amounts, like the amount of whole wheat called for in their “light whole wheat” bread (1 cup ww/5.5c unbleached ap). so, not much. i’m pretty sure the new book will address spelt more fully, perhaps with alternative techniques.
Thanks! I’ll look forward to getting the new book then!
Are all your mulberries the same variety b/c someone just told me last week that some mulberries are white. She had no idea (neither did I, but I wasn’t wondering either).
huh. never thought about it. i don’t know much about mulberries, except that i like to eat them. thanks for the thought; i’ll have to do some research.
Yah!!!!!!!!!! Do it!!!!!!!! I would love to come and stay at a place like that!! My family stayed at a working, organic farm in Tuscany with meals made from the their produce and animals…it was incredible. IV peeps could even work out weekend spirirtual renewal retreats and get their hands dirty on the farm and enjoy some needed respite….
i’d stay anywhere in tuscany, cristina; an organic b&b IN tuscany sounds like the ultimate vacation!
B&B sounds great..you’d be so good at it!
But…you’d be tied down to your house all the time…no vacations! (or trips to see family!)
Mulberries remind me of You and I picking them at Rochelle road when we were 3 and4 years old. We picked them and put them in that infamous orange bowl mom has, or a cool whip container. HA.
there’s a hUGE mulberry tree outside the window here at work…but my coworkers and I haven’t figured out how to GET to it yet. It’s kind of crazy, since it’s in the city! But it’s HUGE! All those mulberries, go to waste every year….
no, we wouldn’t be tied down. that’s the beauty of b&bs…if you want to travel, you just don’t accept reservations for that period of time. if you want to have a large family gathering, you “book up” the b&b with family and don’t take any more reservations.
if i recall correctly, not many mulberries made it into that orange bowl!
oh, our mulberry trees are HUGE, too. they grow about 40 feet tall, at least. we’re only picking from the lowest branches; the birds get the rest. i’ve read that you can put a clean sheet on the ground and shake the branches for the ripe berries to fall. i think i might try it, and it might work for you, too.
My husband walked by as I was reading this – looked at the picture of Eggs in Toast – and promptly asked if I can make that this weekend! I happen to have a batch of abin5 dough in the fridge – so that settles the question of what to make for Sunday morning breakfast. Thank you!
