I haven’t updated on my shampoo-free experimentation. But I got a question via email recently, so thought I’d do a quick update.
I’m back to using an organic shampoo and natural-ish conditioner. I only use a teaspoon or so of the shampoo, and just on my roots, every other day . I had to take a break from the no-pooing, mostly because baking soda lightens my very dark hair. And, my hair is super greasy, and I haven’t found the baking soda/vinegar combo that really gets it clean. I’m sure I could if I stuck with it, but enter the hair lightening factor, and I needed a break.
Have you gone no poo? What’s your experience? Any fellow dark, wavy-haired greasies want to share how it works for you? (As a side note, I’m tired of reading about how people with wavy and curly hair have drier hair, so they have to wash less often, and never should use shampoo. I have very wavy hair, but a very greasy scalp. Am I just a freak of nature?)
I don’t wash my hair that often. I just rinse it. My hair got really damaged from bleaching/flat-ironing last year, oops! When I actually do wash it, I only wash the roots with a very gentle shampoo… my hair gets greasy fast though… must be all my preggo hormones???
Wow, I can’t imagine someone with wavy/curly hair that doesn’t have a greasy scalp! Mine’s *always* been super oily and so although I only wash my hair every two days, I feel like i have to stick with dandruff shampoo. And I hate it!
I did try a mint-base organic shampoo for a while, but also didn’t feel like I was getting quite clean. Especially since I prefer not to strip my hair of all the oils by washing every day. No happy medium could be found.
If you find any info, I’m all ears!! -Em
I forgot about your no poo experiment….I figured it’d be tough, since you (we) have quite the oily hair!
I love shampoo.
I know other curly girls who have greasy scalps, and my hair used to be more oily. I seriously think that my scalp has dried out as a result of living in Alaska, where the air is incredibly cold and dry. there were times last winter when my hair would not curl *at all* due to the dryness. Have you read the book, “Curly Girl” by Lorraine Massey? It explains a lot about curly and wavy hair and different natural ways to take care of curly hair. The website http://www.naturallycurly.com is really good and informative, too.
i have read the book. i enjoyed it.
