I’ve been blogging for six years! Can you believe it? That makes me your grandmother, I suspect. Not as many folks blogging in 2004 as there are now. In honor of this momentous occasion, I’m having a little giveaway – my very first. But more on that in a minute.
Here’s a link to my very first blog post, about my old bonded leather Bible. I started at LiveJournal, because that’s where my friend Adam was blogging. (You’ll see that his last post was in 2007. Go bug him to blog again, will you? It’s not like he has anything else to do. I hear students at Harvard Law have lots of free time. In the meanwhile, go check out his lovely wife’s blog. She’s brilliant.) That was the first I’d heard of blogs, and once I started, I was hooked.
Blogging is a great journaling format for an external processor like me. I spill my thoughts out, and I get feedback. I started out blogging as a way to journal, but keeping in mind that it was a very public forum. So obviously, I only let myself go so deep here. As time went on, I realized that readers responded more to certain posts than others, and I was tempted to start blogging for a specific audience. Especially when I switched over to WordPress and found my stats page, which told me that several hundred of you read this every day. That’s nothing compared to big professional bloggers, who get thousands of hits a day, but it completely astounded (and still astounds) me.
But I decided against blogging for a specific audience, and/or blogging for money. I doubt I’m interesting enough, first of all. And it would ruin the fun. I blog for me, and I love bringing you along for the ride. I’ve met some fantastic people over the years through this blog, as well as connecting/staying connected/re-connecting with folks I already know in real life. I’m so thankful for this format, and for a way to stay virtually connected to those I might otherwise lose contact with. I think I’ve found a good balance of blogging for me while still keeping it interesting for some of you out there. I happen to know that you like to read about pregnancy, natural living, gardening, farming, cooking, crafting and just about anything that’s a tutorial. Baby posts get a lot of hits, too, especially if I include pictures. And the thing is, I like those things, and I like to blog about them, so it works out for all of us. But you’ll still hear me blather on about my kids, the book I’m reading, or the dishes I haven’t done. And I’ll take big breaks from blogging at random intervals. That endears some of you to me, while causing other to move along. And that’s perfectly fine.
So, in honor of six years of sharing my life with the interwebz, I’m going to be giving away a $10 gift certificate to Amazon.com. Just leave a comment below (Facebook readers will need to click over to my WordPress page to enter) by Thursday, March 25 at 5 p.m. EST to be entered. That’s it! Make sure to leave your email address in the comment form (it won’t be shared with anyone else) so I can contact the winner.
Thanks for reading!
